Government counting cost of damage to agricultural sector

The Ministry of Agriculture has revealed that it is conducting its own assessment on the extent of damage to the sector as a result of heavy rains this week.

Teams from the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) are on the ground conducting damage assessments and, as soon as possible, preliminary figures will be obtained as to the true state of damage done to the sector.

Agriculture Minister Karl Samuda is estimating that the losses to agricultural sector will be significant, due to widespread damage to crops, livestock and infrastructure.

Mr. Samuda has announced that the ministry will be providing support to farmers through the Production Incentive Fund, which now stands at $200 million.

He explained that, once the estimates of damage have been completed by RADA, the ministry will undertake the allocation of funding and input supply to those who were affected.
