Amritsar: New Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan Ajay Bisaria visited Partition Museum at Town Hall here on Tuesday. He visited the museum along with his wife. He commented in the visitor’s book that he had visited “…this wonderful museum finally, quite appropriately on the day I take over as India’s representative in Pakistan. This long overdue story has finally been told seven decades later”. Bisaria, a senior Indian diplomat, was previously India’s Ambassador to Poland and takes over the position of High Commissioner to Pakistan from Gautam Bambawale. TNS

Irrigation SDO, kin booked for graft

Chandigarh: The Vigilance Bureau on Tuesday registered a case against Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Kamikar Singh of the Irrigation Department posted at the Dam wing of Patiala in connection with amassing disproportionate wealth besides his income, an official press release said here on Tuesday. The bureau had started inquiry against accused the SDO in 2016. The investigations revealed that the accused SDO and his family had amassed wealth to the tune of Rs 2.38 crore other than the known sources of their income which amounts to 389.83 per cent than the actual income, he said. Inspector held taking bribe

Muktsar: Vigilance sleuths on Tuesday caught Economic Offences Wing (EOW) incharge Inspector Jagsir Singh while accepting a bribe of Rs 16,000 from a resident of Bathinda on the Kotkapura road here on Tuesday evening. Bhupinder Singh, SP, Vigilance, Bathinda, said, “Acting on a complaint, a trap was laid and Inspector Jagsir Singh, posted at the EOW, Muktsar, was caught accepting a bribe of Rs 16,000. TNS

AAP candidate attacked in Patiala  

Patiala: Unidentified men attacked AAP candidate from ward no. 50 Pawan Kumar on Tuesday. The reason behind the incident is unknown. His supporters and eyewitnesses alleged he was attacked by more than 30 Congress men near Gobind Nagar Sher-e-Punjab market. He was rushed to Government Rajindra Hospital. Senior AAP leader Balbir Singh demanded deployment of paramilitary forces and security for candidates. Congress leaders refuted the charge, claiming that the incident was a result of a personal enmity. TNS

Chandigarh: Taking exception to SAD president Sukhbir Badal’s question, “Who is the CM of the state — Captain or Jakhar?”, the Congress on Tuesday sought to remind him that the Chief Minister was the same person who had sent him to the lock-up in 2002. Congress MLAs Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, SS Sukhsarkaria and Harpartap Singh Ajnala said the SAD president’s statement reflected his frustration over a series of defeats and his anticipation of defeat in the civic polls. Financial Bill to hit middle class: Cong  

Chandigarh: The proposed Financial Resolution and Deposit Insurance (FRDI) Bill will severely hit the middle class, said Gurpartap Singh Mann, spokesperson for the Congress. He said it would hit those people who keep their earnings in fixed deposits. The FRDI Bill will also hit the cooperative banking system, he said. This will directly impact the rural credit system to agriculture. TNS

Villagers protest disposal of carcasses

Muktsar: Residents of Kotli Devan, Udekaran and Bura Gujjar villages on Tuesday blocked the Muktsar-Ferozepur highway after some persons threw animal carcasses at Udekaran village’s panchayat land. They said due to carcasses, stray dogs had started thronging the area and posing to be a threat to them. TNS

Employee booked for Rs 3.21-lakh theft 

Abohar: The  police here have booked an employee of a leading finance company for theft at a local office. Hinduja Leyland Finance Company’s branch manager Raman Sharma had informed the police that Rs 3.21 lakh had been stolen by breaking a safe-vault in Suraj Nagari-based office on Saturday night. CCTV footage helped in detecting the culprit. He has been identified as Vikas Suthar, an employee, who had recently quit his job. A case has been registered. OC
