Belle Creek Farm- heritage breeds

Joe Hafner, of Belle Creek Farm, creates a barrier to help load a Gloucestershire Old Spot pig into a trailer for a customer Friday afternoon.

Frederick County’s agriculture history stretches back to the 1700s, but some of its newcomers are the ones working to protect the products that the area’s forefathers relied on.

Joe Hafner stood inside his barn on Friday, trying to entice one of Belle Creek Farm’s Gloucestershire Old Spots to move from one pen to another. The hog stood staring at the short gap between its pen and the other, where two other pigs had already been moved, but his willingness to join them was anything but certain.
