Healthy food policies for kids require common efforts of schools, municipalities, food companies and Lithuanian political authorities, European Commissioner for health and food safety, Vytenis Andriukaitis, said on Monday.

"After some years the situation must change, in particular those market players should be replaced who only care about their business and profits, instead of caring about human health," Andriukaitis was quoted by local media as telling reporters at Lithuanian parliament.

"Healthy food is a common word, and in order to implement healthy food policies, huge efforts are needed. There are many things to rely on such as European documents based on scientific studies," he added.

Updated food preparation requirements for kids went into force in Lithuania as of this September. Some parents went public on social media networks and media claiming that children do not eat the served healthy food and come home hungry from their day care centers.

As of September, children in Lithuania at kindergartens, schools, summer camps or social care institutions must not be offered smoked meat products or dairy products with chocolate, cream, or ice cream.

It is also prohibited to serve meat, fish or poultry coated with breadcrumbs, sauces with roasted bacon, or herring. Maximum allowable amounts of sugar and salt, mandatory fiber content of foods supplied to children are also described in the new regulation recently adopted by the country's health ministry.
