74% of Latvian residents have changed their habits in shopping for food products during Covid-19 pandemic

Covid-19 pandemic and the state of emergency has significantly affected eating and shopping habits of Latvian residents as 74 percent of respondents have changed their shopping behavior, according to a poll conducted by Putnu Fabrika Kekava poultry farm.

As many as 24% of respondents said that they plan to keep their new habits in shopping for food products in a long term.

Following recommendations of epidemiologists, 49% of people chose to reduce the number of their visits to stores, 36% paid attention to the time they visited stores. 4 percent of respondents completely transferred to online shopping, while 1 percent said that on the contrary - forced self-isolation has made them go shopping more often because it is difficult to just stay at home.

Before the pandemic, in 57% of cases people shopped for food products two or three times a week, in 32% of cases - every day, while during the time of restrictions, in 42% of cases people shopped once a week, and in 34 percent of cases - a couple of times a week. The share of people visiting stores two to three times a month rose from 2% to 7%.

The poll also shows that the contents of the food basket has changed during the pandemic with food products with longer expiration terms and better prices becoming more popular. 93% of respondents prefer food products with long expiration terms,  81% choose frozen products, 72% choose convenience foods.

The poll was conducted in July 2020 in cooperation with Snapshots, surveying 702 Latvian residents, aged 18-74.

Kekava Poultry Farm was founded in 1991, the company's share capital is EUR 18,928,084. Lithuania's Linas Agro Group holds 87% of the company's shares.
