Azerbaijan prohibits imports of genetically modified tea and grain products

In this respect, amendments and additions to the Law “On tea growing” and the Law “On grain” have been proposed, the parliament told APA.

According to Article 10.3 of the Law “On tea growing”, genetically modified plants or agricultural plant materials created by modern biotechnological and genetic engineering methods are prohibited from use in the production and circulation of tea and tea products.

According to Article 8.3 of the Law “On grain”, tea and tea products produced using genetically modified plants or agricultural plant materials created through modern biotechnological and genetic engineering methods are prohibited from being imported to the Republic of Azerbaijan.

According to Article 6.8 proposed to the Law “On grain”, the use of plants genetically modified in the production and circulation of grain products or agricultural plant materials created through modern biotechnological and genetic engineering methods are prohibited.

According to Article 11.5 proposed to the Law “On grain”, grain products produced using modified plants or agricultural plant materials created through modern biotechnological and genetic engineering methods are prohibited from being imported to the Republic of Azerbaijan.

A note of each bill envisages that those who violate the ban will bring to responsibility in accordance with the Criminal Code and Administrative Offences Code.

The bills will be tabled at the parliament on June 14.
