Another big month for cheese production

U.S. cheese production during August 2017 was 1.028 billion pounds. That’s up 2.3% from August 2016 and the sixth month in a row above a billion pounds. February has been the sole exception this year, primarily because of fewer business days. Export demand is slow because of increased competition and U.S. supplies have been at or near record highs several times this year, but domestic cheese demand is solid and milk production has been running at faster than a year ago levels. The USDA says Italian type cheese production was up 2.5% from last year at 436.022 million pounds and American type cheese production increased 1.5% to 398.556 million. Butter production was 130.188 million pounds, 6.2% higher than a year ago with the industry anticipating strong fourth quarter demand and improvements in exports.

Nonfat dry milk for human consumption totaled 136 million pounds, a 15.9% jump, and skim milk powders were pegged at 45.6 million pounds, 1.8% lower.

Dry whey totaled 95.8 million pounds, 24.5% higher, lactose for human and animal consumption came out at 97.8 million, up 5.6%, and the whey protein concentrate total was 37.9 million pounds, an increase of 6.3%.

Regular hard ice cream production in August was 74.2 million gallons, up 1.5% on the year, while the total for lowfat was 41.8 million, down 4.3%. Hard sherbet production was 3.43 million gallons, 10.4% above last year, and frozen yogurt totaled 5.69 million gallons, 0.2% higher.

The USDA’s next set of cold storage numbers is out Monday, October 23rd.
