N.J. state troopers rescue 9 rabbits from I-80 crash

Two people went to the hospital and nine rabbits went to the New Jersey State Police barracks after an early morning crash on Interstate 80 in Warren County.

A car hit a deer just before 2 a.m. Tuesday morning in Frelinghuysen Township, a state police spokesman said. The driver and passenger were taken to Hackettstown Medical Center for injuries that are not life-threatening, the spokesman said.

But troopers had to figure out what to do with the pet rabbits in the back seat.

The pets were gathered into a plastic bin, and a trooper cut air holes in the lid, according to a report from WRNJ radio. That report said there were eight rabbits, but the state police spokesman on Wednesday said nine.

The rabbits were taken to the Hope Township barracks until a family member was able to pick them up, the spokesman said.

The right lane of the highway was closed for only a short time after the accident, state police said.
