Denmark want Italy's World Cup training base after Azzurri booked team hotel in Russia prior to calamitous qualifying failure

  • Denmark are scouting locations for team to stay during next year's World Cup
  • Italy had been confident enough of qualification to pre-book accomodation
  • Danes could fill spot left by Italians according to Claus Bretton-Meyer
  • CEO of Danish football admitted: 'We need to see what we can get'

Denmark could take advantage of Italy's failure to qualify for next year's World Cup by using the training base already booked up by the Azzurri.

So confident of progression to Russia 2018 were the Italians that they confirmed the accomodation prior to their 1-0 aggregate defeat by Sweden in the play-off.

And now the Danes are ready to step in, with many of the preferred residences for next summer already taken.

The CEO of Danish football Claus Bretton-Meyer conceded to Sport TV2: 'The big countries have settled in the bigger venues, and so we need to see what we can get.'

And when asked about considering the now vacant Italian base, he added: 'I'm sure it's also there (for consideration).'

Denmark overpowered the Republic of Ireland 5-1, with a Christian Eriksen hat-trick lighting up the victory.

Bretton-Meyer also noted: 'Now there is a big difference between the preferences of the Danes and Italians.

'But it is clear that we can end up in a situation where we must get what we can get.'

If Denmark do cash in on Italy's failure, which has since led to the dismissal of manager Giampiero Ventura, then the ease of access for travelling fans will also be a factor for consideration.

The World Cup is being played between 12 stadiums which mercifully have been located in the west of the country, but the distances to cover can still be vast.

'We would also like to do the best for the fans, so we should have looked at how to ensure the optimal solution for them,' concluded Bretton-Meyer.
