Texas man who stole from program set to give food to Arkansas children gets 15 months

A Texas man was sentenced Thursday to 15 months in prison for his involvement in a scheme that stole money from a program intended to provide food to Arkansas children.

Waymon Weeams, 37, of Rockwall, which is outside of Dallas, was also ordered to pay about $700,000 in restitution and must serve two years of supervised release, U.S. Attorney Cody Hiland said in a statement.

Authorities say Weeams was a sponsor of three locations to feed low-income children in Wynne, Forrest City and Marianna. Weeams claimed as many as 872 children were served at all three sites each day.

Investigators determined that no children received food at the Forrest City site, and Weeams now says between 10 and 50 children were fed at the other two, the U.S. attorney's office for the Eastern District of Arkansas said.

Weeams is the 15th defendant to be sentenced in connection with the scheme to fraudulently obtain U.S. Department of Agriculture program funds, according to the statement.
