Serbia Opposition Weighs Djilas’ Call for Unity

The call of former Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas, who came second in the recent Belgrade elections, for the Serbian opposition to unite has met initial approval.

However, some of the opposition parties now seem to be treating his proposal with more reserve.

“We need an honest and reasoned dialogue on an alliance in which all ideologically similar parties can find a place,” Zoran Zivkovic, head of the New Party and a former Prime Minister, told BIRN.

Zivkovic’s party supported the opposition Democratic Party in the March 4 local elections in Belgrade. But after it failed to reach the threshold needed to enter the assembly, he told BIRN that the poor result showed that some “wrong assessments” had been made.
