Bishkek, Oct. 16, 2018. /Kabar/. The Food Marathon on the occasion of the World Food Day was held in Bishkek Tuesday. Everyone had a chance to prepare a healthy salad from products grown in Kyrgyzstan.

The participants - representatives of the government, civil society, diplomatic community, as well as public figures, stars did not bypass this campaign. They expressed a desire to join the marathon and cook a nutritious dish, the recipe is very simple and affordable, and even more so will provide with vitamins.

Different types of vegetables (beets, carrots, cucumbers), beans, lemon, greens and spices were put on the table. It was required to use all these products and create at a participant’s own discretion a salad. The imagination of the marathoners had no boundaries, some put broccoli as decoration, others lemon, and someone gave the dish a festive color of bright carrots.

The organizers said that the goal of the event is to draw public attention to the problem of food safety and nutrition and show how to improve the diet with the help of affordable products.

In Kyrgyzstan, this issue remains acute - despite the significant water energy resources, the huge potential of the tourism industry and agriculture, the country is highly dependent on imports of basic foodstuffs, especially wheat.

The National Statistical Committee reported that about 1.5 million people in the Kyrgyz Republic live below the poverty line, and most of them live in rural areas. Insufficient and unbalanced nutrition caused serious problems - 13% of children under five have short stature, 43% of children (under 5) and 35% of women have anemia.

UN FAO Representative in the Kyrgyz Republic Dorjee Kinlay noted that nutrition is one of the key universal economic, social and cultural rights reflected in both the Declaration and the Constitution of the Kyrgyz Republic.

Dorjee Kinlay stressed that FAO, together with WFP and other UN agencies, committed themselves to ending hunger by the 30th year. He added that it is important not only to ensure the production of a sufficient amount of food, but also to create an opportunity for the consumption of essential nutrients from food in order to remain healthy.

Andrea Bagnoli, WFP Country Director in Kyrgyzstan, added that the shared task is to make every effort so that every Kyrgyzstani, especially among the most vulnerable groups of the population, has the opportunity to provide themselves with the necessary food to lead a healthy and productive life.

The World Food Day was proclaimed in 1979 as a necessary measure in informing the population about the food problems of the world.

According to the study, more than 800 million people on the planet are still suffering from malnutrition, despite the fact that enough food is produced to feed everyone.
