They Were For the Stimulus After Being Against It: GOP Lawmakers Decry Stimulus Bill, Yet Request Earmarks

They Were For the Stimulus After Being Against It: GOP Lawmakers Decry Stimulus Bill, Yet Request Earmarks

February 10, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ According to the Washington Times, a number of the federal stimulus' biggest, most vocal opponents are maneuvering behind the scenes for their shares of the handouts.

More than a dozen GOP lawmakers who oppose the stimulus have petitioned the US Department of Agriculture, seeking money for projects in their home states. According to the Times, the letters, obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, "expose the gulf between lawmakers' public criticism of the overall stimulus package and their private lobbying for projects close to home."

In a letter to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Missouri Sen. Christopher Bond, who is seeking $50 million for two projects in his state, said the money would "create jobs and ultimately spur economic opportunities."

Bond told the Times, "I strongly opposed the stimulus, but the only thing that could make it worse would be if none of it returned to the taxpayers of Missouri."

The train is leaving the station, and it appears more and more people are willing to jump on it.
