The Vice Chancellor of the Imo State University, Owerri, Prof. Victoria Obasi, has called on the Federal Government to give agricultural production a priority, so as to pull the nation’s economy out of recession.

Addressing an international conference organised by the Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine of the university on Friday, Obasi noted that boosting agricultural production would salvage Nigeria’s dwindling oil economy.

Obasi said overdependence on oil in the past had dragged the Nigerian economy into recession, just as she pointed out that agriculture would revamp the nation’s economy.

In his address, the Dean, Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine of the university, Prof. Benjamin Ekenyem, explained that the international conference, with the sub-theme, ‘Harnessing the Potential of the Environment,’ was organised to share research findings and breakthrough in modern agriculture.

“It was also organised to sensitise the youth to the prospects of agriculture, especially in job creation, income generation, foreign exchange earnings and reduction of youth restiveness and violent crimes,” Ekenyem added.
