St Patrick’s Day party-goers left celebrations at Liverpool Irish Centre to help two women involved in a tragic crash.

Three men, who were outside the Everton-based community hub at the time of last night’s incident , ran over to support the pair following the West Derby Road collision.

The women were later taken to hospital where one of them, aged 30, died.

They are believed to have been hit by a silver Ford C-Max car travelling towards Tuebrook at around 10.50pm.

The second woman, aged 22, suffered serious injuries and was still in hospital this morning.

Police today confirmed the crash took place at West Derby Road’s junction with Boundary Lane - just yards from where crowds were enjoying St Patrick’s Day festivities at the Irish Centre.

Richie Billing, a manager at the Boundary Lane venue, said the crash was a tragedy for the surrounding community and that three customers, who had been chatting outside the centre, ran to help the women.

He added the centre would help the police in any way it could as the force investigates the tragedy.

The women involved in the crash, which led to the road being cordoned off in both directions, are not thought to have been at the centre before the incident.

The driver of the Ford stopped at the scene.

Few homes overlook the site of the tragedy but those living in the area said they only became aware of the incident when the emergency services arrived.

One woman said: “I had never seen so many police and ambulances. The whole road was cordoned off and they weren’t even letting people walk past.”

The road was closed near to to its Sheil Road junction, though the cordons were lifted early this morning.

Strands of police tape remained attached to lampposts and street signs in the area.

Merseyside Police said an investigation had been launched and confirmed a 32-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remained in custody this morning.

A force spokeswoman asked anyone who was in the area last night and who may have witnessed the collision, or who has any information which could assist the investigation, to contact police on Twitter at @MerPolTraffic, or to call on 101 or 0151 777 5747 quoting incident 1039 of March 17.
