Horse shows in North Wales are being cancelled after a number of equine flu cases were confirmed.

Fears over the spread of the virus are increasing in the region after a number of cases were confirmed in the Gwynedd and Anglesey areas.

It comes after an outbreak was confirmed in the Wrexham area in June.

This weekend's North Wales Show near Caernarfon was cancelled after concerns about the spread of the virus were raised , and now more shows are going the same way due to other cases being confirmed.

Bangor-based vets Bodrwnsiwn Equine confirmed that two premises in the Gwynedd area have received positive results for equine flu.

In a statement on Facebook, they said: "We have received confirmation from the Animal Health Trust that all samples submitted from two affected premises are confirmed positive for equine influenza.

"To recap, the affected premises are in Anglesey and Caernarfonshire.

"We believe that a confirmed case also exists in the Dolgellau area.

"We advise that owners keep their horses at home for the time being until the extent of viral spread can be better assessed."

Following on from this announcement, horse shows started to cancel their planned events.

Organisers of the Lloc and District Riding Club Show said: "It is with regret that we have made the decision to cancel our July show due to confirmed cases of Equine Flu in Caernarfon, Anglesey and Wrexham.

"The safety of your horses is paramount to us and we do not wish to place any of them at risk.

"It’s never an easy decision to cancel a show but we hope everyone understands and we will hopefully see you all again in August."

The Gwynedd Welsh Pony and Cob Breeders Association also said they were cancelling their summer medal show on July 13.

It follows confirmation that five horses from Bwlchgwyn , Wrexham, tested positive for the highly contagious disease in late June .

Event organisers at the North Wales Show said earlier this week that they were cancelling due to "exhibitors pulling out left, right and centre".

Exhibitors are now being “strongly advised” to vaccinate their horses for equine flu before competing at this month’s Royal Welsh Show .

In an email to horse owners, Royal Welsh Agricultural Society livestock officer Clare James urged exhibitors to give the event a miss if their animals are showing an signs of illness.

Horses from yards where equine flu is suspected or confirmed should not travel to the show, she said.
