Soil temperatures slowing growth, and some planting in central Wisconsin

An agronomist says he has done some planting but is glad he held off until this week for most of it. Wayne Solinski with Jay-Mar in Plover, Wisconsin says, “A lot of people want to go because the soil conditions are good, but the temperatures aren’t the best yet.”

Solinski tells Brownfield the first 24-36 hours after planting corn are the most critical because that’s when the seed takes on moisture, germinates, and breaks dormancy, so he’s been watching his small test planting of corn from two weeks ago very closely. “Last week, I checked it and there was eighth-inch sprouts on the seeds already, so that showed how quick with that heat it responded, but ever since then, it has been cold.”

Solinski says soil conditions have been very good, so many farmers have been planting, but he expects a lot of planting activity this week with warmer days forecast with some rain expected next week.
