By 2050, the government wants Norway to produce a total of five million tonnes of salmon and trout. That is a fivefold increase from today’s volume.

“We want more growth. How much and how quickly depends on fish welfare, biology, and access to raw feed materials. History shows that the industry has managed to find solutions along the way, something we have great faith in,” Minister of Fisheries and Seafood Odd Emil Ingebrigtsen (H) told newspaper Dagens Næringsliv (DN).

The production target of a fivefold increase in salmon and trout by 2050 is set out in the strategy “A sea of opportunities.”

Today, around 1.3 million tonnes of salmon are produced per year in Norway, which requires 1.6 million tonnes of fish feed.

It is also the feed that accounts for most of the climate emissions when it comes to salmon production, and 90% of the feed ingredients are imported.
