The Oklahoma Forestry Services battles major wildfires every year in and out of the Sooner State. For example, they were in California in n 2020.This season started active and early. So, the team has been busy since June."We're at preparedness level five across the United States right now," said Mark Goeller, state forester and director of the Oklahoma Forestry Services.As of Wednesday, 26 personnel and four engines from Oklahoma are deployed to 12 fires."This situation isn't going to go away for a while. It continues to escalate and get worse," Goeller said.With crews in six states – including Idaho, South Dakota and Montana – Goeller said there are already resource shortages for battling the fires. So, the Oklahoma Forestry Service will likely deploy more crews by next week."We have folks that are serving as firefighters all the way up to command and general staff on type-one incident management teams and everything in between," Goeller said.The personnel rotates shift and camp out while trying to battle just a few of the 100 large fires burning out west."We have a cooperative agreement with the federal government, and part of that co-op agreement is to supply resources in times of need, just like this," Goeller said.Oklahoma knows wildfires, but we haven't had the record heat or extreme drought our friends to the west have had. So, these crews took their years of experience to regions they are needed most.
