Shrimp season opens today

Mississippi’s shrimp season is now open.

Despite the weather, the dock at the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor was looking rather empty this morning. That’s because shrimpers eager to be back out on the sound were ready to cast their nets when the waters officially opened up at 6 a.m.

Our local shrimp supply is still rebounding from the impacts caused by fresh water intrusion with the Bonnet Carre Spillway, although this year, DMR is feeling optimistic that their brown shrimp numbers will be back up.

Yet shrimpers are having to face another challenge as fuel costs rise.

You can assist our shrimpers through buying and making sure you’re eating local.  Director of the Shrimp and Crab Bureau Jason Saucier said, “When you’re out eating at a restaurant, ask your restaurant where they’re getting their shrimp. Try to be aware in your purchasing that you’re buying and that helps support our fishery and makes sure they stay on the water.”

It’ll be a big Memorial Day Weekend for our fisheries as well with the opening of red snapper season on Friday.
