Prep football roundup: Davis rallies to stun Farmington; Bountiful clinches share

KAYSVILLE — Gage Butler’s 30-yard field goal with 1:28 left finished a 10-0 fourth quarter for Davis High football, which rallied to hand Farmington its first loss this season in stunning fashion Friday night by the score of 17-14.

Josh Barker scored both touchdowns for Davis (5-3, 3-1 Region 1): a 6-yard score to tie the game 7-7 at halftime and a 2-yard plunge with 8:33 left in the game to knot it 14-14. His second score capped a 13-play, 98-yard drive that took 5:43 of clock.

Easton Wight threw a 34-yard pass to Dayton Runyan to put Farmington (7-1, 3-1) up 7-0 in the first, and Wight punched in a 1-yard rush in the third for a 14-7 advantage.

Barker led Davis with 61 rushing yards. Jackson Stevens was 23 of 39 through the air for 243 yards and two picks. Easton Baggett caught 10 balls for 92 yards.

Travis Hoopes totaled 58 yards on the ground for Farmington. Wight was 25 of 33 for 235 yards, the scoring pass and three interceptions. Zach Quinton caught 10 passes for 69 yards.

SYRACUSE 45, FREMONT 0

SYRACUSE — Syracuse ran over Fremont (2-6, 2-6 Region 1) with four rushing touchdowns in a shutout.

Kobe Bennett scored on runs of 1 and 4 yards for Syracuse (6-2, 4-0). Carter Child opened the scoring on an 11-yard interception return early in the first quarter.

Jake Hopkins connected with Noah Yeates for a 25-yard touchdown pass and Rhett Thompson scored on a 10-yard run to put the Titans up 35-0 at the half. Thompson booted a 30-yard field goal. Josh Burns capped the scoring on a 6-yard run late in the third quarter.

WEBER 27, OLYMPUS 15

HOLLADAY — Tyce Abbott threw for one touchdown and rushed for another in a non-region road win at Olympus.

Konrad Kerr returned an interception 60 yards for Weber’s (2-6) first score. Abbott found Crash Coggins for a 15-yard scoring strike that gave the Warriors a 14-7 halftime lead.

Tavin Nye scored on a 2-yard dive, then Abbott capped Weber’s scoring on a 1-yard scamper to give the Warriors a 27-7 lead with 9:18 left in the game.

JUAN DIEGO 41, OGDEN 29

OGDEN — Ogden fell behind 21-0 in the first half and mustered a second-half comeback against Juan Diego, but couldn’t ultimately win. Chet Colvin ran for two Ogden (2-5, 1-2 3A North) touchdowns and 155 yards on 13 carries.

Kire Thompson had four catches for 90 yards and one touchdown, thrown by Chino Furniss. The Tigers had five turnovers and the Soaring Eagle had zero.

BOUNTIFUL 17, VIEWMONT 7

BOUNTIFUL — Bountiful scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to rally past Viewmont and clinch at least a share of the Region 5 title, the program’s first back-to-back region crowns since 2001-02.

Landon Zayas put through a 31-yard field goal at the halftime horn to put Bountiful (6-2, 4-0 Region 5) up 3-0.

Viewmont (4-4, 1-3) scored with 1:14 left in the third when Luke Jacobs threw to Landon Jeppesen on an 80-yard scoring strike.

Brigham Morrison gave Bountiful back the lead with a 3-yard run to cap an eight-play, 67-yard drive midway through the fourth, and Ford Creswell put on the finishing touches by returning a Jacobs interception 19 yards for a touchdown with 34 seconds left.

Bountiful outgained Viewmont 239-204. Kenobi Doctolero rushed for 46 yards and Corbin Cottle 44. Owen Gielman passed for 106 yards, with 67 yards going to Faletau Satuala.

Jacobs led Viewmont with 40 rushing yards while throwing 12 of 26 for 147 yards.

MORGAN 38, GRANTSVILLE 20

MORGAN — Morgan scored 24 consecutive points in the second half to avenge last season’s state-title game loss to Grantsville (7-1, 2-1 3A North) and take control of the 3A North region.

Jett Salmon scored on a 2-yard dive to give Morgan (8-0, 3-0) an early lead. After Grantsville answered, Nick Despain found Gavin Turner for an 11-yard touchdown pass, and Morgan led 14-13 at the break.

Gunnar Lish scored on a 2-yard run, Beau Johnson kicked a 35-yard field goal, Despain and Turner connected for a 26-yard score and Lish added a 1-yard run, giving the Trojans a 38-13 lead with 10:04 left in the game.

Despain completed 17 of 27 passes for 202 yards and Morgan rushed for 186 yards as a team. The Trojans held Grantsville to 169 total yards.

LAYTON 46, CLEARFIELD 7

CLEARFIELD — Braxton Martin scored two of Layton’s four rushing touchdowns in a big win over Clearfield.

Martin galloped 65 yards to get Layton (5-3, 2-3 Region 1) on the board, then added a 5-yard run to put the Lancers up 24-7 at the half. Trey Reid returned an interception 31 yards for a score and Ryan Wensel kicked a 25-yard field goal in the second quarter.

Tyler Wensel tossed a 44-yard touchdown pass to Elias Parkinson, Porter Cannon scored on a 1-yard plunge, then Adrian Kelley capped the scoring on a 10-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Clearfield’s (0-8, 0-5 Region 1) defense accounted for the Falcon points on a 55-yard fumble return.

WOODS CROSS 35, BOX ELDER 21

BRIGHAM CITY — Woods Cross scored 29 consecutive points  in a region win at Box Elder.

Bradley Bailey passed for two touchdowns for Woods Cross (5-3, 3-1 Region 5) in the first half: a 5-yarder to Josh Bennion and a 3-yard toss to Jacob Howes. Cash Henderson scored on a 3-yard run and Kelvan Malepeai added a 2-point conversion run to forge a 14-14 halftime tie.

Bailey’s third scoring strike — a 6-yard pass to Ryan Moss with 8:00 left in the game — gave the WIldcats a 28-14 lead. Malepeai scored on a 3-yard run and WX led 35-14 with 1:39 left.

Easton White scored on a 23-yard run for Box Elder, (5-2, 2-2 Region 5) then Jackson McKee took a Ryan Griffin pass 17 yards to the end zone to give the Bees a 14-6 lead with 6:31 left in the first half. Griffin hit Cole Mortensen for a 31-yard touchdown with 34 seconds left for the final margin.

RIDGELINE 28, BEAR RIVER 0

GARLAND — Bear River gave up one touchdown in each quarter in a home loss to Ridgeline.

Owen Olsen completed 11 of 14 passes for 97 yards for Bear River (2-6, 1-3 Region 11). Ryker Jeppsen rushed for 45 yards on 10 carries. The Bears gained 189 total yards while giving up 381.

SUGAR-SALEM 28, LAYTON CHRISTIAN 9

SUGAR CITY, Idaho — Davi Paulino booted a 32-yard field goal with 4:33 left in the first half to get Layton Christian on the board in a loss at Sugar-Salem (Idaho).

Ilai Tagidugu scored on a 40-yard run in the fourth quarter for Layton Christian (5-3).
