THE embattled nuns of the Rural Missionaries in the Philippines (RMP) on Friday, December 2, 2022. got another shot in the arm as the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) expressed support for its mission.

In a statement, CBCP President Pablo David said they are one with other religious organizations, including the Conference of Major Superiors in the Philippines (CMSP), in supporting the nuns currently facing terrorist funding cases.

"As mission partners of the CMSP, the RMP have consistently committed themselves to serving the poorest of the poor in the peripheries of the Philippine society," said David.

"In the spirit of synodality, along with our brothers and sisters in the CMSP, we express our solidarity with the RMP as they continue to bring the light of the Gospel to the landless peasants, small farmers, fisherfolks, IPs (indigenous peoples) and the rest of the rural poor," he added.

The prelate said this is because the RMP has long proven to be dedicated to serving the poor in accordance with the teachings of the Catholic Church.

"For more than five decades now, these consecrated men and women, priests and lay missionaries have been harbingers of hope and justice to the marginalized by engaging themselves in very challenging ministries that most concretely embody PCP II's vision of a church of the poor," said David.

He said such acts in the past have also earned the ire of some sectors, thereby making such persecution no longer new.

"They have also been persecuted several times in the past as a consequence of their mission," said David.

In August, the Department of Justice filed terrorist financing raps against 16 individuals, including members of RMP, such as nuns.

This as the accused individuals supposedly made funds available to the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army. (HDT/SunStar Philippines)
