Finding a European destination that’s both romantic and affordable can be quite a challenge, especially when the ongoing Cost of Living crisis has left many Brits literally counting the pennies.

But there is hope for those who might be looking for a place to honeymoon this summer that’s still within budget. Podgorica in Montenegro, has been named the most affordable European city for a romantic getaway for two.

Research conducted by travel experts Jersey Island Holidays found the cost of a two-day trip from two people from the UK to the Montenegrin capital came to just £222, much cheaper than other places in the continent.

Having compared the costs with other European cities across various travel websites, the study found that Podgorica offered the best value for money for a couples’ getaway. The costs included two nights' accommodation, a romantic three-course dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant, and excursions.

While a couple would spend a combined average of £89 on return tickets to Podgorica, they could expect to spend around £22 for a three-course meal at a mid-range restaurant, or £11 each. Taxis around Podgorica would also cost a total of £5 for two days.

There’s also plenty to do in Podgorica. You could visit the Millennium Bridge, one of the most iconic landmarks in the city with stunning views of the Morača River.

Stari Grad, the historic centre of Podgorica, is also home to many cultural and historical sites, such as the Clock Tower, Ribnica Fortress, and the remains of the ancient city of Doclea.

If you’re curious to try some local Montenegrin cuisine, there are many great restaurants in Podgorica where you can try local dishes such as cevapi, kacamak, and burek.

Alternatively, for a bit of nature, you can visit Lake Skadar, the largest lake in the Balkans, located just a short drive from Podgorica. You can go swimming, kayaking, or fishing in the lake, or just enjoy the beautiful scenery.
