TOURISM Malaysia is targeting foreign tourists as well as locals with “durian tourism” packages aimed at promoting the King of Fruits nationwide this year.
Tourism Malaysia’s Package Development director Shahrin Mokhtar said the packages would be promoted in Johor, Pahang, Selangor, Perak, Kedah and Perlis.
Last year, it only covered Penang.
“Tourism Malaysia has taken the initiative to also market the packages abroad, such as in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Brunei and Singapore,” Shahrin told reporters after the launch of the packages at Happy Fruit in Tangkak, Johor.
He also encouraged industry players offering the packages to diversify their activities by having participants pick durian, eat other local fruits, view the tempoyak- making process and allow them to experience village life.
The durian tourism campaign until Aug 31 is organised in collaboration with the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute and 13 local tourism operators.
A total of 18 packages are available, including durian buffets and three-day, two-night stay options.
