Montana State University has been named one of the world’s top universities for studies of Agriculture & Forestry in the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject.
MSU was the only institution in Montana to be listed in the rankings, released March 12 by global higher education analyst QS Quacquarelli Symonds, a firm which conducts independent comparative analysis on the performance of more than 18,300 individual university programs at more than 1,700 universities around the world. MSU’s agriculture program placed among the top 350-400 institutions internationally.
MSU’s College of Agriculture offers 11 bachelor’s, nine master’s and four doctoral programs across six departments and the collaborative WIMU veterinary program. For four years in a row, the college has led all MSU colleges in research expenditures, totaling $54 million in 2024. Its research bodies include world-class labs, centers and teams, as well as seven research centers around the state.
The company bases its measures of institutional reputation on survey responses from more than 240,000 employers and academics. It also measures research impact and productivity, based on how many times published scientific papers are cited by other researchers and “h-index” measurements, which quantify researchers’ scholarly impact. International Research Network data were used to assess cross-border research collaboration. In addition to rankings by subject, QS also produces a widely known annual overall ranking of the world’s universities.
“It is wonderful to be recognized as a top college in the world,” said Sreekala Bajwa, dean of MSU’s College of Agriculture. “This international recognition is all thanks to our world-class faculty and researchers who are conducting cutting-edge research that is positively impacting the people in Montana and beyond, while also preparing the next generation of professionals to be global leaders in their field.”
