Over 3 dozen hatching eggs seized by Agriculture Specialists in Louisville
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Over a two-week period in March, US Customs and Border Protection Agriculture Specialists in Louisville have seized over three dozen hatching eggs.
CBP has seen a 48% increase of raw and fresh eggs seized at the northern and southern borders in 2025 compared to 2024, but it’s a different type of egg that’s been arriving at ports of entry in the Midwest.
There have been three seizures at the Louisville port of entry in March, with 39 hatching eggs being seized from March 6 to March 20.
Hatching eggs are all avian species, including poultry, game birds, and racing pigeons. The live eggs are shipped to the US for hatching or reproduction purposes. For agricultural purposes, hatching eggs fall under the live animal regulations and are highly regulated due to a risk of Newcastle disease or Avian Flu.
The first two shipments arrived on March 6 and March 16 and were from Turkey, heading to New York and Nevada. The last shipment arrived from Romania on March 19 and was heading to Costa Rica.
