ROYAL HEIST – Police are reportedly investigating a burglary at the home of Prince Guillaume, brother of Grand Duke Henri, after jewellery and artworks were stolen in early March. According to RTL sources, burglars have stolen art objects and jewellery belonging to the Grand Ducal family.
EDUCATION – Education Minister Claude Meisch has unveiled plans to expand secondary school capacity, including three new European schools, to accommodate the Grand Duchy's growing student population. Luxembourg's rising population has led to an increasing number of students in schools, prompting the minister to acknowledge the need for greater capacity in the Grand Duchy's secondary schools.
FOOD SAFETY – Shoppers in Luxembourg are being urged to check their pantries after potential glass and wood contamination was identified in products from Auchan and Alnatura brands. The Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration has issued recall notices for Auchan's Ratatouille gourmande and Alnatura branded sea salt crisps, sold between 11 February and 21 March.
ENVIRONMENT – Conservation groups are asking drivers to slow down on the country's roads as toads begin their annual spring migration. The Nature and Forest Agency and nonprofit natur&ëmwelt are warning motorists to be vigilant as toads will be crossing roads throughout the Grand Duchy. Nocturnal migrations typically peak in March, with toads travelling from wooded areas to breeding ponds between late evening and early morning.
HOUSING – Luxembourg's state coffers gained approximately €20 million from public property auctions over the past five years, Minister of Finance Gilles Roth and Minister of Housing Claude Meisch revealed on Tuesday. The number of auctioned properties has decreased from 250 to 135 annually over the past five years. During this period, about 1,370 properties were auctioned off to the highest bidder. Of these, 164 were occupied residential/mixed-use buildings and 117 were flats.

BLACK SEA – Russia and Ukraine have agreed to halt military strikes in the Black Sea, achieving a tentative first step towards peace. US negotiators met separately over three days in the Saudi capital Riyadh with delegations from Kyiv and Russia. In a statement, the White House said that each country "agreed to ensure safe navigation, eliminate the use of force and prevent the use of commercial vessels for military purposes in the Black Sea".
MOBILITY – The European Union has agreed provisionally to introduce digital driving licences and a probation period for new drivers, as part of a package of reforms to improve road safety. It also decided that individual EU countries should decide whether to make health check-ups a requirement for obtaining a driving licence. The reforms are part of a road safety package aimed at halving deaths and injuries on European roads by 2030.
DEVASTATING FIRE – Dozens have died and tens of thousands have been displaced as wildfires tear through southeastern South Korea, in what officials describe as the country's most devastating blaze on record. At least 19 people have been killed with multiple raging blazes causing "unprecedented damage", the acting president said Wednesday.
US FOREIGN POLICY – US Vice President JD Vance will visit a US military base in Greenland on Friday, increasing tensions with Denmark as the Trump administration renews its push to take control of the resource-rich Arctic territory. Vance, who has become Trump's attack dog on foreign policy matters, will travel with his wife Usha to Pituffik Space Base "to receive a briefing on Arctic security issues and meet with US service members", his office said Tuesday in a statement.

FOOTBALL – Switzerland overpowered Luxembourg with a 3-1 win in St Gallen on Tuesday, scoring three first-half goals to hand the Red Lions a sobering end to their international break. Luxembourg's only response came from a late penalty converted by Danel Sinani in the 89th minute.
A former bodyguard of Diego Maradona was arrested Tuesday for allegedly giving false testimony in the trial of seven health professionals accused of criminal negligence in the late football legend's medical care. Julio Coria left the courtroom in the Buenos Aires suburb of San Isidro in handcuffs after judges ruled in favor of the prosecution's claim that he had lied under oath.
Former Manchester City footballer Joey Barton has been given a 12-week suspended prison sentence after being found guilty of assaulting his wife at their family home. The former midfielder left Georgia Barton with a lump on her forehead and a bleeding nose after the incident in southwest London, in June 2021. Barton, 42, grabbed his wife and pushed her to the ground before kicking her in the head after a drunken row about a family matter.
FORMULA 1 – Yuki Tsunoda will partner world champion Max Verstappen at the Japanese Grand Prix following Red Bull's decision to sack struggling Liam Lawson after just two races, reports claimed Tuesday. The 24-year-old Tsunoda will be promoted from Red Bull's sister team RB for his home race at Suzuka on April 4-6, Dutch newspaper Telegraaf and French broadcaster Canal+ said.
BASKETBALL – The NBA is to review a proposal to create a European basketball league. Sports business news website Sportico said league owners will consider a plan that includes eight to 10 franchises, including up to four teams who already play in the EuroLeague – Europe's top club competition.The proposed league would also feature new franchises in cities such as London and Paris, which could be worth as much as $500 million.
TENNIS – World number one Aryna Sabalenka battled back in the second set to blast her way into the semi-finals of the Miami Open with a 6-2, 7-5 win over China's Zheng Qinwen on Tuesday. The victory gives Sabalenka her first place in the last four at Miami, with a clash against Italy's Jasmine Paolini standing between her and a place in the final.
