Gabriel Fabbri, 29, of Bruce, is the shop manager of the 1776 Sporting Goods store located inside Ace Hardware. A fishing enthusiast, he has won fishing tournaments before. But none of those compares to winning the top prize in the Bassmaster B.A.S.S. Nation Series Fishing Contest.
In early March, Fabbri went down to Florence, Ala. to participate in the Bass Nation fishing contest that took place on Pickwick Lake March 12-14.
He competed in the category of “non-boater,” or as a co-angler, which means he was randomly paired up with a “boater.” They both fished from the same boat, but competed against others in their same category. It was a three-day tournament with a limit of three fish per day.
The fish he caught weighed an average of 4.2 pounds, for a total of just over 37 pounds, and he won first place by nine pounds. He was not the only competitor from Wisconsin, and in fact, the person he rode down there with, Kasey Meyer of Marshfield, won second place.
This was Fabbri’s first Bassmaster tournament. He’s been fishing in local club tournaments and smaller open tournaments since he was 12 years old, and thinks he has won at least a dozen tournaments.
He said “I’ve won tournaments before but not at this level.”
Fabbri, along with the the top-twenty finishers in each of the four national regions will compete in the Nationals, which will be held on the Mississippi River near LaCrosse in October.
Fabbri, who is originally from Hurley, moved to this area after his wife Molly got a job at Bruce School as guidance counselor and Spanish teacher.
He and his wife are parents of an 11-month-old baby, Miles. Having previously been employed by Gander Mountain, he has been shop manager at 1776 Sporting Goods for just over two years.
