Senegal: Government announces further drop in price of broken rice
Diop, chaired a meeting of the National Consumer Council this Thursday to consider a further reduction in the price of broken rice. Discussions resulted in a reduction of 60 CFA francs per kilogram, setting its retail price at 350 CFA francs, compared to 410 CFA francs previously. The measure will be officially ratified by the President of the Republic on April 3, 2025.
During his speech, the minister recalled that broken rice is the most consumed food product in Senegal, with an annual demand of 1,300,000 tons. “The objective of this meeting is to present to the members of the National Consumer Council a review of a single price, that of broken rice. It was therefore important to make this adjustment,” he explained.

A decline favored by negotiations and the global context
Reflecting on his missions to India, Serigne Gueye Diop emphasized that these trips contributed to this price reduction. “Government negotiations, combined with a favorable global context, made it possible to cautiously consider this decline. Rice prices gradually declined throughout 2025, and this trend is expected to continue. It is therefore normal for the State to adjust prices downward,” he said.
The minister also reiterated that the role of the National Consumer Council is advisory. “All prices must be discussed and approved before being submitted to the President of the Republic, who will make the official announcement on April 3,” he said.

For Serigne Gueye Diop, this measure is part of the government’s desire to support citizens, particularly those on low incomes. “Whenever possible, the State will take the necessary measures to reduce the cost of living and protect household purchasing power,” he stated.
