Dan Osborn announces exploratory committee for run against Sen. Pete Ricketts in 2026
Dan Osborn, a decades-long Independent, is forming an exploratory committee for another U.S. Senate run.
Osborn, who lost against Republican Deb Fischer in the November election, said in a statement Thursday that he would be campaigning against Republican Sen. Pete Ricketts — if he runs.
"Two years ago, I was an unknown union mechanic in Nebraska. Then, I ran for U.S. Senate. We shocked everyone and got 47%," Osborn said. "Multi-billionaire Pete Ricketts is Nebraska's other Senator. He's up next year. We could replace a billionaire with a mechanic."
Ricketts has held the seat since 2023 when he was appointed by Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen to fill the vacancy created by Ben Sasse stepping down. Ricketts then defeated Democrat Preston Love Jr. in a special election in November 2024.
Ricketts is expected to run for his first full term next year. His campaign cited Ricketts' work as Nebraska's governor and so far as a U.S. Senator.
"Senator Ricketts received the most votes in state history last election because he has a proven track record of delivering for Nebraskans," Ricketts' campaign said in a statement.
Osborn, a steamfitter and industrial mechanic, helped preserve nearly 500 jobs in Nebraska during the Kellogg's strike.
