The Stinky Cheese Man & Other Fairly Stupid Tales. Based on the book by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith, this hilarious musical deconstructs the tradition of the fairy tale. Characters slide in and out of their tales and nothing is quite as you remember it. Poor Jack. He’s got to use his wits to save himself from the terrible Giant, so he begins telling his own versions of some very familiar stories: a tortoise racing a hair-growing hare; Cinderumplestiltskin; Little Red Running Shorts; and a couple of princesses who kiss frogs and sleep on peas. Jack must not only tell tales as fast as he can for as long as he can to avoid being eaten, but he must also overcome the disturbances caused by that pesky, bread-obsessed Red Hen and that annoying Stinky Cheese Man. 11 a.m. Saturday, at the Strand Theatre at the Appell Center. All tickets $15.

Film Appreciation — Peter Weir: “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.” During the Napoleonic Wars, Lucky Jack (Russell Crowe) a brash British captain pushes his ship and crew to their limits in pursuit of a formidable French war vessel around South America. Based on roughly three of the novels of Patrick O’Brian, the film centers on the relationship of Captain Jack Aubrey and Dr Stephen Maturin portrayed by Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany. This is a thoughtful, meditative film well worth revisiting and although it was a modest success, it didn’t generate any sequels unlike the popular “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies released that same year. 3 p.m. Saturday, at the West Classroom at the Appell Center. Series $75, $60 for ages 65+.

Caplive: Thunderbeard — A Tribute to ZZ Top. ThunderBeard is the ultimate ZZ Top tribute that authentically recreates the live experience of “That Little Ol’ Band from Texas.” These guys will have you singing along to classic hits such as “La Grange,” “Tush” and “Sharp Dressed Man,” plus many other classics from the legendary band’s 50+ year history. This will be an unforgettable live show that will have you feeling like you’ve been transported back to the heyday of one of the greatest rock bands of all time. 7:30 p.m. Saturday, at the Capitol Theatre at the Appell Center. Tickets start at $36.75.
