BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - After a cold front hit Bryan-College Station, Thursday saw clear skies and temperatures in the high 80s, perfect timing ahead of Texas A&M track & field’s first home outdoor meet of the season.

The change in temperature was evident when A&M head track & field coach Pat Henry showed up to a media availability at E.B. Cushing Stadium team meeting room in a straw bucket hat. Henry declared it was perfect weather for the 44 Farms Team Invitational.

The only thing hotter than the weather in B/CS might be the Aggie track team, particularly on the men’s side.

“We’re probably a little better than we’ve been across the board than we’ve been at any time that I’ve been here,” Henry said. “Even some years that we won a national championship here, we weren’t as good across the board as this group may be.”

A bold declaration for a coach in his 21st season in Aggieland, who has nine national championships with the Maroon and White.

Henry quickly followed up on that claim. “That doesn’t mean anything about winning a national championship because that’s aligning of the stars. But this is one of those groups that will have the opportunity to be very successful.”

Leading the charge for the Aggies is senior Auhmad Robinson, who is coming off a personal best 44.61 in the 400m to top the nation while also capturing the third-fastest time in the world this year. The senior was also a member of the 4x400m team, which included Antonie Nortje, Cutler Zamzow and Kimar Farquharson, who paced the country and world after running 3:02.15 to win the Florida Relays.

“We’re unbeatable,” Robinson said of his 4x400 squad. “Every time we step on the track, I know nobody can beat us. And when I get the stick, you know it’s over.

Robinson has lofty goals, and like Henry, knows this team is capable of bringing home a national title this June.

“Last year it was like, alright, let’s just go win,” Robinson said. “Like that was just, we want to win it. But this time it feels like everybody’s hungry, like we have a lot of seniors this year. So that’s our last time we’re going to be putting on that maroon uniform. So it’s just a different feeling, instead of last year. Now we know, this is our last time ever wearing that A&M uniform.”

A&M is joined at the 44 Farms Team Invitational by another 31 schools, including Auburn, Baylor, East Texas A&M, Eastern Michigan, Georgia, Houston, HCU, Illinois, Incarnate Word, Iowa State, Lamar, Louisville, Michigan, Mississippi State, Nebraska, North Texas, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Princeton, Sam Houston, SMU, TCU, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas State, Texas Tech, USC, UT-Arlington, UTSA, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin.

This caliber of competition should be a great benchmark and projection of what the Aggies can accomplish this season.

The meet begins Friday with the decathlon/heptathlon starting at 11 am, field events starting at 2 pm, and running events starting at 6 pm. The meet concludes Saturday with similar start times.
