Man United revisit '£40m transfer decision' after Andre Onana horror show in Lyon
Manchester United are said to be interested in Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki as Andre Onana continues to come under pressure at Old Trafford.
Manchester United are reportedly stepping up their interest in Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. The Reds are said to be considering a new shot-stopper this summer after a series of high profile blunders from Andre Onana.
The former Inter Milan keeper was once again culpable as United squandered a late lead against Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday night. The Cameroon international was at fault for both goals scored by the French team, allowing Thiago Almada's cross to nestle into the bottom corner from a cross out wide, before spilling an effort straight into the path of Rayan Cherki for Lyon's late equaliser.
Onana's errors followed a spat with former United midfielder Nemanja Matic, who currently plays for Lyon but was named among the substitutes for the match and did not enter the field of play.
Thursday's 2-2 draw in the first leg of their quarter-final clash has put United under pressure going into next week's huge second leg at Old Trafford. The Reds know that their only route back into Europe for the 2025/26 campaign will be by winning Europe's second-tier competition.
And talkSPORT claim that the Reds are stepping up their scouting of Parma's Suzuki. It is said that the Italian club value him at £40million.
The Japanese international has shone for a side battling relegation in Italy's Serie A. The 22-year-old has made 30 appearances across all competitions for Parma.
United agreed a fee with Urawa Red Diamonds to sign Suzuki on a permanent transfer in the summer of 2023. However, he rejected the move and joined Belgian side Sint-Truiden on loan.
The Manchester Evening News reported in March that Onana intends to stay at United next season despite his struggling form. United boss Ruben Amorim has also defended the Reds' No.1 after his mistakes in Lyon.
"It can happen," Amorim said of Onana's mistakes. "If you play football, you play a lot of games, you can make mistakes. If you look at the season, I make more mistakes than them during these last games and these last months. The other thing is we have one more game to change everything and that should be our focus.
"I don’t know (if Matic unsettled Onana), that can happen. The best thing is to look at the goals, all the actions that Andre had in the game, talk with (Jorge) Vital and Craig (Mawson), this is the best way to help any player. It’s to focus on the game, what happened, what we need to improve and then put the player in.
"I didn’t see [Onana], to be honest with you. I use these minutes to try to calm down, to come here to say the right things. It’s normal. I felt the dressing room was really quiet. We draw away, in Europe, that is always hard, but the team is suffering, we need to change that.
"Nothing. We have training, go with Vital and we deal with that. Really natural. That can happen with any player. There’s nothing I can say to Andre in this moment. The most important thing is to be natural and then, when the time comes, I will choose the best XI to play. But I’m really confident in Andre."
