The Sarajevo National Theatre said that it received, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of BiH, a letter regarding an official protest note from the Turkish Embassy in BiH over the performance of the play "Six Against Turkey".
The NPS statement notes that the play was written by Jeton Neziraj, “one of the internationally best-known Kosovar playwrights.”
“The former artistic director of the National Theatre of Kosovo has written over 20 plays, and his work has been performed at theatre festivals across Europe and the USA. The German theatre magazine Theater der Zeit described him as ‘the Kafka of the Balkans.’ The play is directed by Blerta Neziraj, whose productions for Qendra Multimedia have toured internationally, including in Lausanne, Milan, Vienna, Hamburg, Lyon, Bern, and New York. Earlier this year, she directed a new version of Balkan Bordello in Uppsala, Sweden. She is an alumna of the Lincoln Center Theatre Directors Lab. Her awards include Best Direction in Kosovar Theatre 2020,” they emphasize.
They add that Qendra Multimedia is a cultural organization based in Pristina, Kosovo, focused on contemporary theatre and literature.
“As a production company, Qendra Multimedia has earned a reputation for producing some of the most cutting-edge and provocative works in Southeast Europe, with plays that spark debate among audiences. Qendra Multimedia has co-produced with theatres across Europe and the USA, including Berlin’s Volksbühne and La MaMa in New York. The Sarajevo National Theatre realized the ‘Handke Project’ in co-production with Qendra Multimedia, Mittelfest – Teatro della Pergola – Theater Dortmund, achieving great international success on stages at home and in Europe,” the statement reads.
“The Sarajevo National Theatre does not recognize forms of ideological censorship; both guest and local artists are free to critically re-examine the societal circumstances and the era in which we live. Art in free and democratic societies – whose values we uphold – does not have thematic restrictions on freedom of thought and expression. We have fought for such values in every time and under every circumstance, and they cannot be abolished by any political pressure,” the NPS concludes.
