Blue Ridge Beef is recalling Kitten Mix and Puppy Mix due to contamination with Salmonella and Listeria, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The recall was initiated after a customer reported of animal illness. The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets collected product samples on March 20.
On April 1, the company was informed by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture that the products tested positive for Salmonella and Listeria.
The recalled products include 1,080 lbs. of 2 lb logs of Kitten Mix with Lot # N26 0114, and 1,380 lbs of their 2 lb logs of Puppy Mix with Lot # N25 1230. Both products were available in clear plastic packaging.
The recalled products were distributed between January 3 and January 24.
The impacted products were mainly sold in stores in the states of Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Tennessee, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin.
Salmonella and Listeria can make animals sick if they consume contaminated pet food. Humans can also be affected if they are not thoroughly washing their hands after having contact with the impacted products or any exposed surfaces.
Healthy people who get infected with Salmonella or Listeria need to watch for symptoms like feeling sick, throwing up, diarrhea at times with blood, stomach pain, and fever.
In rare cases, these infections can cause more serious problems like infections in the blood vessels or heart, joint pain, sore muscles, eye problems, and urinary tract symptoms. If someone has these symptoms after being in contact with the product, they are asked to visit the doctor.
Pets infected with Salmonella or Listeria might seem tired and have diarrhea, fever, or vomiting. Some pets may just eat less, have a fever, or seem to have a sore stomach.
Consumers are warned not to feed the recalled products to pets or any other animals. These items must not be sold, donated, or shared under any circumstances.
Recalled products must be disposed of securely, in a way that prevents access by children, pets, and wildlife or return the product to the place of purchase.
In recent recalls, New Jersey-based Turkana Food Inc. recalled Aleppo Tahini Sesame Paste in February due to potential contamination with Salmonella.
In March, New Age International Inc. recalled all lots of Daily Veggies brand Enoki Mushroom due to potential contamination of Listeria monocytogenes.
