NATIONAL CONSULTATION ON THE GLOBAL COMPACT FOR MIGRATION
Djibouti held the National Consultation for the Global Compact for safe, orderly and regular migration at the "Institut d'Etudes Diplomatiques" in Djibouti city on Sunday, September 24th, 2017. IOM Djibouti in partnership with the Ministry of the Interior held the first National Consultation in the East and Horn of Africa Region to date. The consultations in Djibouti marked an opportunity for government partners to share their contributions for global migration governance from the perspective of a country of transit of international migration.
In attendance were the Minister of the Interior, the Minister of Women and Family Affairs, the Minister of Habitat, Urbanism and the Environment and the Minister of Education, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Equipment and Transport, the Gendarmerie Nationale, the Secretariat of Social Affairs, the National Police, the Prefectures of Arta, Obock, Tadjourah and regional representation of smaller localities in Djibouti. Several agencies, NGOs, and other local stakeholders also attended to share their perspectives of migration-related priorities for Djibouti as well as provide suggestions for the six migra-tion-related thematic areas identified in Annex 2 of the 2016 New York Declaration.
Following presentations from the Minister of the Interior and the Chief of Mission from IOM, the partici-pants separated into three groups to discuss the six thematic areas and recommend priorities for the GCM zero draft to be prepared in 2018. Recommendations will also be shared with IGAD to consolidate a common position for all IGAD member states to be presented to the AU.
