'The president is just wrong': CNN reporter knocks down Trump's 'ludicrous' conspiracy theory about FBI plant

President Donald Trump has been ranting about an alleged plot from the FBI to plant a spy in his campaign in 2016 -- but a CNN reporter who is well connected to law enforcement officials said on Friday that Trump is just flat-out wrong.

CNN's Shimon Prokupecz told host Poppy Harlow that his sources are claiming the president has absolutely no idea what he's talking about when it comes to an informant who allegedly relayed information about the Trump campaign to law enforcement officials.

"Everyone we have been talking to about this has said that the president is just wrong," Prokupecz explained. "The notion that somehow the FBI implanted, planted someone inside the campaign to spy on the campaign is just not true according to several people we have been talking to."

Prokupecz would not go into very much detail about what he knew about the FBI's source, but he said that the source was an American who "was providing information to the FBI, to the CIA" and was "involved in other investigations as well."

The reporter said that while law enforcement officials did not want to go on the record in correcting the president, they did feel the need to push back against what they said is false information.

"This notion, the idea that they put someone inside the campaign, that law enforcement or intelligence officials planted someone inside the campaign, they're telling us it is just ludicrous," he said.
