ONE of two men who tragically lost their lives after their fishing boat capsized has been named locally.

One of two men who tragically lost their lives last night after their fishing boat capsized off the coast of Malin Head, Co. Donegal has been named locally.

A man in his 60’s and a 16-year-old boy were pronounced dead shortly after being rescued and taken to hospital.

A third man in his 50’s is in a stable condition in hospital following the rescue mission which occurred around 4pm yesterday.

The three men had set off from Malin Pier around midday yesterday and were less than a kilometre out to sea when their 15ft boat capsized.

Tourists staying at a nearby cottage heard their cries for help and alerted local emergency services.

The rescue operation involved lifeboats from the Lough Swilly RNLI, the Malin Head Coast Guard and the Coast Guard 118 helicopter.

The 16-year-old boy was the first to be pulled from the water by a local fishing vessel, followed by the man in his 50’s a short time later.

The man in his 60’s was recovered just before 6pm, two hours after the boat had capsized, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was named locally last night as Gerry Doherty from Carndonagh, Co. Donegal.

His body was taken to Letterkenny University Hospital where a post mortem will take place.
